Sep 2011 - Part 08

30-40 mins.

Here are travel tips I have started sending out to people, hope you can use them:

(ps: none of the links I include are sponsored and I am not taking cuts for recommending anything, these are just useful notes I have gathered over the course of the year we have been open to answer the most frequently asked questions)

It's best to have your own car and drive around but car rental is really expensive in Iceland so most of our guests have decided to rent from:

Affordable car rental:

http://www.acr.is/

or

Cheap Jeep car rental:

http://www.cheapjeep.is/

The cars are a bit old and worn but should get you around ;-)

Our guests have often bonded while here and decided to share a car, but you never know who you are sharing the house with if anyone at all so here is an Icelandic website where you can electronically hitchhike with like-minded people:

http://samferda.is/

Regarding tours, I haven't been on any of them myself but my guests have recommended these guys:

http://www.goecco.com/ and their tourist info partners http://www.myreykjavik.is/

(because they are friendly and fun)

http://www.netbus.is/

(because they are cheap)

http://www.icelandhorizon.is/

(because they are friendly and fun AND cheap!)

get there if you take the Flybus:

http://www.re.is/Flybus//

There are also these three young guys that started a little friendly tour company last summer.  They even take you to their house for dinner:

http://www.wheninreykjavik.com/

I think they are only operating on request now and I am sure you can just contact them, tell them what you want to do and they would create a tour around it.

(Then these are the biggest and most popular ones:

http://www.grayline.is/

and

http://www.re.is/

but I hear those tours are rather impersonal and have large groups on large buses)

Most people arriving for the first time choose visit the Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir geyser area and Thingvellir national park. All of these are close together only about an hours drive and is referred to as the Golden Circle.

Then the Blue Lagoon is a must and it is good to do that on your way to or from the airport because it is on the way. There are buses that go from the airport to there and keep your luggage while you are there and then take you into town.

You could also just visit the Tourist information office when you get here , relax, grab a few brochures and decide over coffee or beer ;-D

For local tips, this guy Sam, a doorman at Bakkus bar, has a great website with useful articles about life and travel in Iceland.  Even though I was born and raised here and he is from Switzerland and only been here a few years he seems to knows a lot more than me about stuff in and outside of the city:

This lady Maria, also not a native, has a great eye:

Everywhere is good to eat, it just depends on what you are in the mood for. Íslenski barinn on Pósthússtræti by the parliament is fun and serves sample jars of traditional Icelandic food (actually that can be pretty disgusting) and all the Icelandic beers in frosted mugs.

http://www.islenskibarinn.is/Islenski_barinn/Islenski_Barinn.html

Café Loki has more normal traditional food like plokkfiskur (fish stew), rolled up sugared pancakes and kjötsúpa (lamb meat soup) with weird twists such as rye-bread ice cream etc.  That one is more of a lunch place than a dinner place as it closes at 18pm:

The Noodle station on Skólavörðustígur has cheap and awesome noodle soup and was voted best new restaurant in Reykjavík even though it is just a noodle stand.

And bring swim clothes. Lots of pools here as you may know, all heated and with hot tubs and saunas. There is also a sauna at Our House that can warm you up after a hard day of sightseeing

There are almost always concerts and things in the evening (at least on Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays).  Most often the concerts are not planned that far in advance here.  They usually just pop up on my Facebook a few days before or even hours before so I write concert info on our whiteboard here every day.  If you are into good music, you should check out:

http://www.gogoyoko.com/

where you can stream lots of great Icelandic music for free and get to know new bands.  They say everyone in Iceland is either in a band or writing a book.  Our House even has it´s own music label!

Our House
